Information to survey participants

Would you like to take part in the research project “Attitudes toward aviation climate policies”?

You are invited to participate in a study about public views on various measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from aviation. The results will be shared with policymakers and other stakeholders working on climate strategies for the aviation sector.

Purpose of the project

Aviation contributes significantly to climate change, and governments are considering different policies and actions to reduce emissions. This study examines how people view different policies and actions. We are interested in your opinions on these suggestions.

The study is part of a research project led by CICERO Center for International Climate Research and funded by the Research Council of Norway.

Why have you been invited?

You have been randomly selected from the Prolific and Cint panels. Invitations have been sent to approximately 4,000 panel members across four countries to capture diverse perspectives.

Who is responsible for the project?

CICERO is responsible for the project and for the processing of your data.

Participation is voluntary

Your participation is entirely voluntary. If you do not wish to take part, you may opt out at any time by contacting us (see details below). There are no negative consequences for choosing not to participate.

What does participation involve?

  • You will be asked to complete an online survey.
  • It takes approximately 5–7 minutes to complete.
  • You’ll be asked about air travel, climate, and your views on a range of proposed policy measures.

CICERO will only receive anonymized data, that is, responses that cannot be linked to you as an individual.

Data protection - how we store and use your personal data

Access to the survey database is strictly limited to the core research team at CICERO, ensuring that only those directly involved in the analysis can view the information. Your survey responses are anonymised by separating any direct identifiers—such as your Prolific ID used solely for survey administration—from your answers. The Prolific ID will be completely deleted from our records once payment for participation has been processed.

All data are encrypted and stored on CICERO’s secure servers, in full compliance with GDPR. We use a GDPR‑compliant online survey provider to process and host responses, and no data are transferred outside the EU/EEA. When reporting our findings, we will present only aggregated results, so that no individual responses can ever be identified.

What gives us the right to process data about you?

We process your information for research purposes in the public interest, as obtaining individual consent from a large, randomly selected sample would be disproportionate and could jeopardize anonymity. Our study addresses significant societal benefits by informing aviation policy design to support policy goals.

Your rights
As long as you can be identified in the collected data, you have the right to request access to the data we are processing about you and to request that the data is corrected or deleted. If you contact us regarding your rights, you will hear from us within a month. We will provide an explanation if we cannot identify you or if your rights cannot be exercised. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Data Protection Authority about how we are processing your data.

If you have questions or want to exercise your rights, please contact:

If you have questions about how Data Protection Services have assessed the project, you can contact them by email: personverntjenester@sikt.no, or by phone: +47 73 98 40 40.

What happens to the data after the project ends?

The project ends on December 31, 2026. CICERO will not retain any personally identifiable information.
